Polar Bear

Polar Bear

I don’t profess to be an expert on the subject, but I’m led to believe that Polar Bears are one the nastier species on the planet. Solitary predators who roam a bleak landscape in search of things to bite and eat. Yet when you watch Polar Bear Cubs you see curiosity and playfulness.

For this wood burning I had technical and creative goals. Technically I chose to be very sparse with the burning; just edges and a bit of tone. I let the pine tell some of the story by itself.

Creatively I wanted to merge the playful cub with the predator adult. There is energy in the form with the teeth bared, ready to strike, but the look in the eye says “Yay!”

Sadie and Murphy (Irish Water Spaniels)

Pyrography on basswood. 11 x 14

The first of two commissioned portraits of Irish Water Spaniels (the other is C.J. by the Seashore). I was able to hang out a bit with Sadie and Murphy prior to the pyrography which was a huge perk.

Getting to know the personalities of animals is a great help to getting a wood burning to come to life. I learned that Murphy (on the right) bounds around with joyful abandon. Sadie is a little shy and aloof, but mischievous. She is never too far behind Murphy and loves to follow his lead.

These are two commissioned wood burnings that came to me through my work on Cowboy Country.

The first is of 2007 Saddle Bronc champion Dustin Flundra and his record breaking performance on Lynx Mountain.

The second is Gary Rempel who in 2009 was named CPRA Pickup Man of the Year, Broke a record as a 12 time CFR Pickup Man and celebrated 25 years with the Calgary Stampede.

Spirit Bear

This wood burning was specially made as a gift for my Aunt and Uncle’s 50th Wedding Anniversary. They live in Hamburg, Germany and have been to visit many times. The highlight is always a trip to the Rockies. My Uncle Horst has always wanted to see a bear, but never has. Some things are best left unseen.

I decided to make Spirit Bear in honor of his wish. The scene is composed of a lone Grizzly standing on the shore in front ot Spirit Island in Maligne Lake, near Jasper, Alberta. The artwork is actually the top of a serving tray.

When I started making some art with the intent of selling it I thought an interesting angle would be to have ‘functional’ art like trays and coasters and boxes. While many of the recipe boxes and DVD holders have been put to use, I’ve been told by purchasers of coasters and trays that the owners wouldn’t dream of using them that way for fear of damage.

I’ll take that as a gracious compliment to my work, but also as a lesson in my lack of marketing prowess.

Grizzly Growl

Pyrography on pine. 7.75 x 10.5

One of the more popular wood burnings I’ve made, this snarling fellow now resides in Burford, Ontario. Using photo reference and my hobby burner my goal was to bring the bear to life. The trickiest part for me was figuring out the inside of his mouth. Not being able to (or wanting to) get up close and personal for a better look I had to wing it a bit. I’ve since smelt my share of puppy breath trying to get a better understanding of animal anatomy.

C.J. by the Seashore

Pyrography with oil colour on basswood. 11 x 7

This wood burning is the follow up to another commissioned picture of Irish Water Spaniels. For the first I was able to meet the two dogs in question and learn a little about their personalities. I find that valuable to getting a good likeness of any living creature.

I didn’t have that luxury with C.J. and only had a few reference shots to work with. I did hear a story about how she loved walking along a beach on Vancouver Island near a lighthouse so that became part of the composition.

The funny part is the sketch I showed my client had a lighthouse that looked too East Coast (probably because I used a picture from Nova Scotia as reference). Turns out Lighthouses have personality too!

Chickadee

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /homepages/41/d94810368/htdocs/pyrographyart/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-flickr-manager/FlickrManager.php on line 335

Pyrography on pine with oil colour. 5 x 7

When some good friends gave me a calendar containing their beautiful photography including a great shot of a chickadee, I knew what I would give them as a return gift! This piece was made with a hobby wood burner primarily using a fine detail tip.

Chickadee is also is the first time I used oil pencils. I wanted to get the back lighting to make the bird ‘pop’, but didn’t want to go too dark on the background.

The oil pigment doesn’t entirely absorb into the wood so varnishing can cause the color to bleed a little. I only use color for accents in my pyrography so it hasn’t been an issue for me.

Grizzly Cubs Playing

Made with my first hobby burner, this is one of the quicker compositions I’ve made. Using a photo for reference I brushed a universal tip across the surface of the pine to get the fuzzy fur feeling. A lot of the time I burn myself (pun intended) by not knowing when to stop and overwork a piece. I’m glad I knew when to stop on this one!

If ever there was a face destined for woodburning, it’s that of Clint Eastwood. The above samples show I’ve had some fun torching out his likeness.

John Wayne

Pyrography on Maple. 12 x 12

Say hello to the Duke! My dad is a huge John Wayne fan so I decided to burn this portrait as a Fathers’ Day gift. Using my Hobby Burner I used largely a stipple work or pointalism technique. It’s one of the more time consuming techniques to try, but I love the results. Also, it was produced over two absurdly cold winter days so staying inside and tapping away wasn’t a bad way to pass the time!
