Anyone who’s traveled across Canada by car knows that getting through the Prairies is a long journey. While visiting Pier 21, the Immigration Museum in Halifax I read about how European Immigrants were brought over with promise of farmland and the start of a fresh, prosperous life. All this was true, but what they weren’t told was there would be a two week train ride with only a wooden plank to rest on to get there!

I decided to give my composition the more nostalgic approach. The perspective offers the impression of a train having come a long way. The destination, an iconic grain elevator, is the symbol of prosperity and hope for those who lost everything during the first and second world wars. Someday I will use pyrography to depict the sweat and toil, but for now I choose the optimistic view!
